The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has completed six rounds of counseling for admissions into IITs. All 18,160 seats in the IITs have been filled. Further rounds will continue only for admissions into NITs, which have a total of 62,853 seats. Admissions are being done based on JEE Advanced ranks.
This year, due to reduced competition for IITs, the cutoff ranks have increased. For instance, in IIT Hyderabad, last year boys secured a CSE seat with a rank of 656, while this year it went up to 673. As many students feel JEE Advanced is difficult, they are limiting themselves to JEE Mains and preferring NITs, IIITs, or top state engineering colleges.
In NITs, especially for CSE, there is high demand. Seats in open category were allotted only up to 6,000 ranks. In contrast, in Chemical Engineering, even students with ranks above 30,000 got seats.
**According to JEE faculty M.N. Rao**, the rise in cutoffs this year is due to fewer students opting for JEE Advanced. Many are focusing on NITs and top-tier state colleges instead.
